1. Tell us about you .
I am a mom to four boys and my husband is a youth pastor full time and so I feel like I am also mom to hundreds of teenagers. So that's always my opening line. I am also though a Peter Pan soul that never seems to want to know how I want to approach my photography journey and in what avenue or avenues...I am constantly trying to follow my heart but in this particular area the market is so saturated it is so hard to have a niche that your passionate about. Truly though I love photographing all sorts of people but I would love to photograph them more in my way instead of the Pinterest cookie cutter way and I am working hard towards that transition. The shoot you will see featured here is fully my heart and the first part of a new journey for me coming soon.
2. When did you learn photography ?
As a little girl actually. Both my grandfathers were photographers and my father. My father was such a camera nerd that even being very little I always had the best cameras to tinker with. I have three very specific memories of photography as I was growing up all my cousins and I laying on the floor in sleeping bags eating popcorn as we watched all our grandparents and fathers images be played on slideshows on a sheet in the living room, that I won a contest at 7 for photographing a barn (I still love that image and barns), and that I was given an awesome Minolta Film camera as a teenager that I thought I was too cool for and sold it to be a small point and shoot digital (what the heck was I thinking) I would give anything to get that back.
3. Whose work has influenced you most ?
I adore black and whites and so I feel cliche in saying Ansel Adams but it's true. I also love Annie Leibovitz work the feel of it , and though some of it scares the crap out of me, I am drawn as I think so many are to Sally Mann. On a lighter note I do also love newborn work and though I am not a fan really of her work anymore I appreciate Anne Geddes for changing that industry. Current artists I love are Jasmin Pickens of course or I wouldn't be here, Lukas Piatek, Angie McCabe, Twig and Olive, and Joy Prouty...my list could go on forever and is all over the place as far as style. That is why I believe I have had trouble finding my own niche ...I am a mixed bag and love it all.
4. How do you educate yourself to grow in your art ?
Every slow season which in Michigan is January to April I stock up online workshops and good old library books and just cuddle in pjs most days and take it all in. I find workshops through artists themselves and places like Creative Live, and Clickin Moms.
5. What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I wish I knew how to value myself more. I am still struggling with the whole putting the right price on my services and the art I provide to my clients. I play the comparison game way to much and need to focus on finding what is me. I think I am almost there. I don't know maybe I will always be searching as I do find my heart is ever changing. I also on a business front would encourage anyone considering being a pro to figure out all the biz details up front, web design, taxes, insurance, those were things I learned the hard way and I do mean hard. The best advice I could give see if you could trade services for people in these industries to help you.
6. What kind of gear do you use?
We have two Canon 6D's and a Canon Mark IV. I can tell while I love my Mark IV I equally and sometimes more love my 6D. The 6D I don't care what they tell you handles better in low light than any camera I have touched. It may be grainer than the Mark IV but the 6D can grab focus in almost a totally dark room. I am a lens addict I have a 24-70 mm 2.8 (for when I am lazy and don't want to move my body with my primes) then I have a 35 sigma art 1.4, an 85 mm 1.8 (mostly for my second shooters at weddings), a nifty fifty I mean everybody should just have one of those, a 70-200 mm 2.8 and a Sigma 15mm fisheye 2.8 for fun. I also have lots of flashes and an ice light but I only pull those out for weddings.
That's me in a big nutshell I guess.. just a gal still trying to weave my way through this new inundated world of photography and figuring out who I am , what is my why for doing this and just hoping to someday be able to fully follow my hearts desire when I nail down what that truly means. I wish I could offer you up a more figured out me but I am just not there yet.
